Many famous athletes choose to eat a plant-based diet because of its nutritional benefits. From football players to surfers and tennis players, many athletes have shifted their diets to live a vegan lifestyle. So who exactly are these vegan athletes? Jurek is an ultra marathon runner who runs hundreds of miles at a time. What an inspiration! He set the record for the fastest time to run all 2,189 miles of the Appalachian Trail and ran an average of 50 miles every day for 46 days. Crazy, right!? He gains all of the 5,000-8,000 daily calories he needs through green smoothies, brown rice, pasta, and Clif products.

This 18 year old pro surfer is dominating surfing competitions all over the world, including the 2015 ISA World Surfing Games. Besides being a surfer, Blanco is an avid vegan and yogi. She was a vegetarian her entire life before reading “The China Study” and watching “Forks Over Knives,” which caused her to make the transition to veganism. She claims that she has more energy for surfing now that she is a vegan and no longer gets sore after workouts.

You may know Carter as a defensive lineman for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals. Now you can also know him as the 300lb vegan! He is a strong advocate for animal rights and publicly speaks about the topic. Carter is famous for saying, “You don’t need to take a life to gain muscle.” He is living proof that you can gain all of the protein  you need to be a successful NFL player without eating meat or animal products.

Venus and Serena Williams

After venus was diagnosed with Sjögren’s syndrome, she decided to adopt a vegan diet. Her sister, Serena, took on the vegan lifestyle as well to support her sister. They fuel up for their tennis workouts by drinking green smoothies with protein powder, eating quinoa, and indulging in popcorn.

These athletes are proof that you can live a highly active lifestyle while being a vegan. There are many sources of vegan protein that fuel your body and allow you to gain the muscle needed to perform in all types of sports!
