The Benefits of Watermelon

Watermelon. It’s your classic go to summer fruit, and has a nostalgic reminiscence of childhood barbeques on July 4th. But there is so much more to watermelon that you probably did not know! In addition to being the perfect summer snack, watermelon is enjoyed all year round, and has unique abilities to boost men’s health in several different ways.

Firstly, it is a great source of hydration! Watermelon is made up of 92% water, so a serving or two is almost equivalent to a cup of water, with the addition of several different electrolytes, each serving different purposes. Watermelon has a nice amount of magnesium, which helps maintain normal muscle, nerve function, steady heart rhythm, a healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong. It is also great for the metabolism and breaking down proteins into energy.

Next, watermelon is filled with an electrolyte called choline, which is great for muscles, sleep, fat absorption, transmission of nerve signals and learning as well as reducing chronic inflammation which can prevent the following diseases: heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and alzheimer’s.

Watermelon has high levels of potassium, which is known to be beneficial for heart function and plays a key role in skeletal and smooth muscle contraction, making it important for normal digestive and muscular function. Additionally, potassium counteracts the effects of sodium, helping to maintain a healthy blood pressure.

Lastly, this summer fruit has high levels of citrulline, which is an amino acid that, once converted to nitric oxide after consumption, relaxes and dilates blood vessels. This can help maintain a healthy blood flow and can actually work in similar ways to drugs that treat erectile dysfunction!

So, what are you waiting for! Ditch those sugary snacks and eat some watermelon! Not only is it a great pre or post workout snack, it can help keep your prostate healthy!
